PERFECTING YOUR SMILE (Understanding Teeth Straightening In Malaysia)

Teeth Straightening

Teeth straightening corrects rotated, crowded, or uneven teeth, resolves gaps, and corrects a dysfunctional bite—improving your aesthetic appearance, and general oral health.

Teeth straightening in Malaysia is gaining popularity, henceforth there are a few options that our orthodontic specialist at Nuffield will be able to present to you upon consultation.

What is Teeth Straightening?

What is Teeth Straightening?

There are four types of braces that can be commonly found in Malaysia. They are:

  1. Traditional metal braces involve brackets and wires attached to the teeth, allowing their positioning to be altered as required.
  2. Ceramic braces are constructed with a ceramic material that blends into the teeth’s natural colour so that the braces are less noticeable.
  3. Lingual braces are similar to metal braces except they are attached to the inside of the teeth.
  4. Self-ligating braces, (e.g. Damon braces) gradually tighten over time, using a sliding mechanism, to straighten your teeth.

However, our orthodontist can also provide other teeth-straightening methods to best suit your needs. These include:

  1. Invisalign are customised clear aligners worn over the teeth.
  2. Myobrace is a preventive pre-orthodontic treatment best suited for children from ages 3 to 15 years old.
  3. Cfast® cosmetic braces uses cosmetic nickel-titanium wires that work in conjunction with ceramic brackets to align the teeth gently. These are mostly used by adult teeth for their six visible teeth to fix their smile.

Benefits of Teeth Straightening

There are multiple benefits of getting your teeth straightened, including:

Aesthetic & Cosmetic Appeal

Having a beautiful smile you’re proud to flash is always helpful when engaging in social activity. It influences how you see yourself, increases your self-esteem, and makes you self-assured individual.

Enhanced Care for Teeth & Gums

With straight teeth, it is easier to brush and floss, and so less likely for plaque to build up. Therefore bacteria is not left to multiply and affect gums, preventing the formation of cavities or gum disease.

Aligning Your Bite

Having an unaligned bite causes pressure to be distributed unevenly across teeth, meaning some teeth experience increased pressure. This may cause teeth to get worn down faster than normal or for it to chip and break. Having teeth straightened would produce an increased aligned bite.

Do I Need Teeth Straightening?

Do I Need Teeth Straightening?

You may need teeth straightening in Malaysia if you have:
  • Rotated, Crowded, or Uneven Teeth. Crooked teeth can be unpleasant and difficult to brush and floss. They may cause largely spaced gaps between your teeth, small teeth, missing teeth (due to an extraction, gum disease, failure of development) or knocked-out (due to physical trauma or teeth buried under your gums).

  • A Dysfunctional Bite. Do you chew on one side significantly than the other? Difficulty in chewing food properly can be caused by a dysfunctional bite. This can lead to having speech difficulties or gum recession where teeth from the opposite jaw bite against your gums.
  • If not treated early, a dysfunctional bite can damage your teeth, gums and other soft tissues in your mouth. In severe cases, you may get temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJD) which causes significant facial asymmetry. Orthodontic teeth straightening can help to correct your dysfunctional bite.

What Does the Procedure Involve?

A Full Dental Assessment:

  • Before choosing any of the teeth straightening methods, you will be needed to go down for a consultation with our orthodontic specialist to assess your general health condition, as well as the condition of your teeth and gums.
  • This will include some X-ray scans, intraoral scans, and mouth impressions to assess your facial anatomy, teeth, and suitability for orthodontic teeth straightening and other treatment options.
