TAKING AN INTEGRATED APPROACH TO ORAL HEALTH

Holistic Dentistry

Holistic dentistry, also known as integrative or biological dentistry, embraces an attitude towards oral health that takes into account the total well-being of a patient and their environment.

It is the bridge between conventional medicine and dentistry, a sect of dentistry that advocates the use of minimally invasive techniques as well as for biocompatible dental materials. It also focuses on treating the dental issues of a person by taking into consideration their overall health, instead of doing so in isolation.

Beyond holistic dental care, we should strive towards overall well-being and health by balancing the body, mind and spirit.

What is Holistic Dentistry?

What is Holistic Dentistry?

Holistic dentistry is built upon the idea that prevention is better than cure. Integrated body systems take a holistic approach to dentistry. While most people believe oral health diverts away from overall health of the body, the integrative approach looks at dental care as part of the health of a person.

Dentists who practice holistic dentistry may use methods or products that differ from generally accepted dental practices.

How is Holistic Dentistry Different from Regular Dentistry?

The holisitic approach has numerous benefits, as it takes into consideration a person's complete well-being, looking at other factors that could potentially affect a person's oral health.

Focus on Prevention & Education

Our team at Nuffield Dental specially dedicates time to educate you on good self-care techniques in aspects such as oral hygiene, diet, alcohol intake, smoking, stress management, etc., to help you gain confidence in looking after your oral health.

For instance, your dentist will explain the connection between oral conditions and health problems like tooth decay and gum disease and pregnancy, diabetes, and cardiovascular health. The holistic dentist may also inform you about physical, nutritional, and environmental components that have an influence in your life.

Considering the Relation Between Oral Health & General Well-Being

Research increasingly shows how oral health can have an impact on the health of the rest of your body (e.g., heart, lungs) and vice versa. The healthier your teeth, mouth, gums and jaws are, the lesser you are at risk of diseases such as heart disease, lung disease, or diabetes.

This is done through having healthy habits of maintaining a balanced diet, having a good oral care routine, following a regular sleeping pattern, exercising regularly, consuming moderate amounts of alcohol, as well as avoiding smoking.

Use of Biologically Compatible Material

Holistic dentistry also places an emphasis on using non-toxic materials, and of employing dental techniques and procedures that are least invasive and most natural.

These include the use of surgical equipment such as preferring to use gloves made of nitrile instead of ones made of latex. Dentists who specialise in holistic dentistry also avoid procedures such as the use of dental crowns, where substantial amounts of teeth are removed, preferring instead to use methods which are natural and non-invasive.

Use of Biologically Compatible Material

Use of Biologically Compatible Material

We take pride in sourcing and selecting materials that are as non-toxic and as minimally invasive as possible. This is to ensure that any dental treatment you have will exist in harmony with your body and protect the health of the body as well as the mouth.

Latex-Free
Instead of using latex gloves, we prefer the use of gloves made of alternative materials such as that made of nitrile, in order to enhance safety and comfort during all your visits with us.

Mercury-Free

When removing old dental amalgam fillings, we take multiple precautions to collect any mercury from the procedure to minimise exposure. This includes:

  • Placement of a dam to isolate the tooth and protect the rest of your mouth from exposure
  • Use of ultra high-speed suction to collect residual mercury vapour
  • Skilful sectioning of the filling by the dentist

Phasing Out Non-Precious Metal Crowns and Onlays
We no longer use non-precious metal crowns and onlays in all of our clinics, as they are very harsh to your teeth and may trigger allergic or autoimmune responses in some. Instead, we selectively use ceramics or precious metals, which are biocompatible.
Avoid the Use of Certain Techniques

Holistic dentists try to avoid drilling practices. For instance, when a patient requires a filling, they ensure that much of the tooth is left intact before using non-toxic filling material. They avoid procedures like dental crowns that involve the removal of much of the tooth, and instead use inlays for cavities.
